Check out our FB event for more details! Info session Saturday, September 22nd 3-5 pm. We will review roller derby game play, gear and skills to be taught in the session!
Our Mad Mayhem home bout on Saturday was amazing! Thank you to Moose Lake Mafia for coming down to skate with us! Thank you to our awesome fans for cheering us on! We are so fortunate to have such an awesome following in our rookie year! Huge thanks to Twin Cities Junior Roller Derby and Bass Brand Brass Band for being great entertainment for our fans! We also cannot forget to that all the people that made our bout so great; thanks to all the volunteers, NSOs and EMTs we couldn’t have done it without you!
Make sure you listen to the radio tomorrow! Our very own Whindy Q and Ver-Rockin-Ya will be talking all about Derby and our upcoming bout this weekend! They will be on 95.7 @ 8:30am, 99.1 @ 8:40am and 103.5 @ 8:50am!
The MAD Girls are still looking for volunteers for this Saturday’s (5/4) bout! Please send us an email with your contact information to firstname.lastname@example.org with “volunteer” in the subject line. We need you! We are even throwing in a few MAD Girls items for helping us out! Thank you!
We love that y’all are starting to ask about what it takes to join the MAD Girls! Good news! Fresh Meat training is upon us. Sundays from now until June 2nd, 2:30 to 5:30 at the YMCA. It’s $30 for the entire session. Registration closes next week! At the Meat Locker you’ll learn the basic skills we put to use; stops, falls, stepping, jumping, you’ll get it all.
But if the first thing you need isn’t MAD skills, what is it?
Let’s talk gear. Roller skates, quad style roller skates. The only people allowed on roller blades are the refs. (And we sort of make fun of the refs who wear them. Sorry, y’all, these are the hard truths.) There are plenty of places to get these, though not many here in Mankato. Roller Revolution and Derby 4 All up in the cities are our skate shops of choice. You can even check Craigslist and find the occasional deal. Don’t be intimidated by talk of wheel hardness and grippyness. You’ll get there. For now, you just need some skates.
We all fall down. We even fall down on purpose, just so we can be sure that when it’s not on purpose, we do it right. Nobody, and I mean nobody, skates without protective gear. You’re going to need knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a mouth guard, and a helmet. Triple 8, Scabs, and 187s are the most common brands for pads. Mouth guards cost about 2 bucks at Wal-Mart and Target. You can get pricier ones, but you don’t have to. As for helmets, you want to protect your head, it’s where your brain lives! Most of us use multi-purpose helmets, but within the sport there is a movement towards using hockey helmets. Gear designed for when you fall, rather than if you fall is good. You are going to fall.
What do you need the most of to do derby? Time. We practice twice a week, 7:30 to 9, with an additional once a month Sunday practice. We also have league meetings once a month, and everyone in the league is on two committees. (Bout Planning, Safety, Training, Sponsorship, Finance, Conflict Resolution, Volunteer, Rules, and Merch and Promotions are the options there.) Some committees do meet more often than others, but all require some involvement. Roller derby is the time eating monster. And we all love it.
Want to be a Derby Skater? Want to enforce the rules and have the lower impact skate life of a Ref? Are you a legal adult? Please join us for our Fresh Meat Training to try out for one of these illustrious amateur lifestyles.
Women and men over 18 are welcome! Zebras (refs), can be male or female. We are looking into starting a men’s league too!
We will spend these sessions learning all of the roller derby basics. Skating skills are not required, but gear is. All participants must have a helmet, quad skates (no inline), mouth guard, wrist guards, elbow pads and knee pads.
Date: Sundays, April 7th – June 2nd
Time: 2:30 – 5:30 pm
Place: Mankato YMCA, Blue Gym
The entire session will cost $30.
At the end of the session all participants will be tested with the WFTDA skating assessment and find out if they made the team.
What should I bring to my first practice?
*Wear comfortable clothes you can work out in
*Gear – Helmet, Mouthguard, elbow pads, wrist guards, knee pads and quad skates
*A positive attitude and willingness to learn
***Paperwork: you must fill out a skater application, waiver, and emergency contact information BEFORE you put skates on. Our trainers will have these materials available.***

Thanks to the Verizon Wireless Center for having us and we look forward to working with you again for our next home bout May 4th! We also want to thank the Goosetown Roller Girls for joining us! After Mankato realizes how amazing roller derby is we are beginning our first Fresh Meat Locker/Tryouts on Sundays from April 7th through June 2nd at 2:30-5:30 pm. There will be 8-9 sessions (may or may not have practice Memorial Day Weekend). Skaters can come with no previous skate experience, we will teach you everything you need to know. Skaters must have gear at the first practice. Gear includes: helmet, mouth guard, elbow pads, wrist guards, knee pads and quad skates! No inline skates. We are trying to see if we can wrangle one of the derby shops in the cities to come down also (more details to come about that).
